چکیده

The photonic bandgap of periodic multilayers with diffuse interface is calculated by considering an empirical model for the interdiffusion profile. The model for the diffuse profile is based on the error function Erf and a characteristic parameter σ. The model is valid for multilayer structure with arbitrary layer thickness. It is shown that the width of the bandgap varies with the value of σ and the Brillouin zone boundary. Numerical examples are presented. It is suggested that measuring the ratio of the width of the bandgaps at different orders, that is to say determining experimentally the ratio of width of the different Bragg peaks on a reflectivity curve, can allow estimating the thickness of the interdiffusion layer.

Reflectance Properties of Thue-Morse 1-D Dielectric Multilayers

Omnidirectional reflectivity is theoretically investigated in four Thue-Morse (T-M) structures S4, S5, S6 and S7. It is observed that the width of omnidirectional reflection region increases with the order of T-M multilayer i.e. from S4 to S7 generation and multiple photonic band gaps exist for both TE and TM modes due to self-similarity of T-M multilayers. It can also be found that multiple om...

Complete and absolute photonic bandgaps in highly symmetric photonic quasicrystals embedded in low refractive index materials

It is firmly established that periodic lattice structures can support photonic bandgaps (PBG). However, complete and absolute photonic bandgaps (CAPBG) have only been achieved in high dielectric constant mediums such as GaAs (o=13.6). An artificial quasiperiodic photonic crystal based on the random square-triangle tiling system was designed and fabricated. The photonic quasicrystal possesses 12...

Semiclassical Coupled Wave Theory for Bandgap Calculations in Periodically Stratified Dielectric Media

Photonic crystals are artificial low-loss either two-dimensional (2D) or three-dimensional (3D) dielectric structures with a periodic modulation of the refractive index. Due to Bragg reflection, electromagnetic (optical) waves cannot propagate through such structures in certain directions, at certain frequencies. Hence, photonic crystals can exhibit bandgaps (even omnidirectional bandgaps in ce...

General unit-disk representation for periodic multilayers.

We suggest a geometrical framework in which to discuss periodic layered structures in the unit disk. Bandgaps appear when the point representing the system approaches the unit circle. We show that the trace of the matrix describing the basic period allows for a classification in three families of orbits with quite different properties. The laws of convergence of the iterates to the unit circle ...

Fano resonance in anodic aluminum oxide based photonic crystals

Anodic aluminum oxide based photonic crystals with periodic porous structure have been prepared using voltage compensation method. The as-prepared sample showed an ultra-narrow photonic bandgap. Asymmetric line-shape profiles of the photonic bandgaps have been observed, which is attributed to Fano resonance between the photonic bandgap state of photonic crystal and continuum scattering state of...
